Demolition in progress!

Our demolition permit was approved (yay!) and we have started demolition on the fire-damaged animal shelter. This is expected to take a while – but then we can rebuild!

The rebuild will be done in phases:  as each phase is approved, we will proceed. The first phase will be to lay the foundation. If weather is good, we expect to start this in a week or two.

Sweetpea Thanks To Isaiah, Our Birthday Guardian Angel!

Isaiah is our honored Guardian Angel this month! He collected donations for Sweetpea for his birthday and is shown here with all the goodies he collected for us. Isaiah is the brother of another of Sweetpea’s Guardian Angels, Michaela, who donates the profits from her lemonade stand and craft works to Sweetpea.   Many thanks, and hugs and kisses on your birthday, Isaiah, from Sweetpea – you made our work a lot easier!

Sweetpea Volunteers/Fosters

We are seeking volunteers to join us in our animal rescue, fostering, and rehabilitation work – as well as planning events, and having fun with other Sweetpea volunteers! Please email us at for more details.

Volunteer meetings are held on the first Friday of every month at 7pm at the Sweetpea Shelter. Come join us, discover what we are all about, and pick up a volunteer application to become a registered volunteer (registration is important for insurance reasons) and/or an approved foster home. We look forward to seeing you!

Fire At Sweetpea Shelter

Our shelter on the border of Paxton and Rutland, MA caught fire on Sunday 11/22/2015. We lost 17 dogs and 39 cats, who were loved and who were members of our Sweetpea family – we mourn their loss every day. We are determined to rise again to save more animals in an area with no other animal rescue center or shelter.

Our main animal shelter building was destroyed by a fire on Sunday 11/22/2015, probably caused by an electrical fault.

Sweetpea For Animals is a nonprofit, no-kill animal rescue organization. We take in animals who are on “death row” at other shelters, or whose owners can’t keep them but don’t want to surrender them to a kill shelter. We rely on donations, plus any revenue raised from boarding dogs and cats at our kennels, to run our animal rescue. This fire cleaned out our whole year’s operating budget – and then some. This is really serious for us – we had just taken a mortgage on the rescue shelter and one of the two shelter buildings burned to the ground.

Please donate, to help our rebuilding effort.  Please contact Melanie Kenadek with offers of help.
