Hello from your friends at Sweetpea.

Although it is hard to imagine with all the snow left out there, spring is coming soon. Our annual dog walk will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at Rutland State Park. Registration for the three mile walk will begin at 10:00 a.m. and leave at 11:15 a.m. Registration for the one mile walk will begin at 10:45 a.m. and leave at 11:30 a.m. It is a great day to get out and enjoy the spring weather, get some exercise for you and your pooch, and meet some great people and dogs. There will be refreshments and a D.J. after the walk. Dogs must be up to date with their vaccinations and leashed.

Last year's walk was a good fundraiser. We were fortunate again to be blessed with good weather. The second annual Sabrina "Bri" Clark Award was given to D.J. who has donated his services to provide us with great music for several years. Sabrina, granddaughter of founder, Richard Clark, was always available to help with the dogwalk and the Sweetpea float in the Rutland 4th of July parade, until her death in 2009.
Unfortunately our summer golf tournament was cancelled in 2010 because of low registration. We hope to get more interest in a September 2011 tournament. A morning of golf will be followed by a buffet lunch and raffle.

Sweetpea was represented last year at Pet Rock and Holden Days. We also have a table at Petco in Auburn almost every weekend. We give information about Sweetpea,  raise funds, and try to find prospective adopters for our cats and dogs. Our board is looking into ways to help low income and elderly with certain veterinary services.

We have looked at several parcels of land for a Sweetpea shelter. None have been appropriate. We are also looking into steel buildings as an option. If anyone knows of a suitable site, preferably in Rutland, or has any expertise in constructing a shelter that they would like to share, please contact us.

Would you like to sponsor a dog pen or cat cage for an animal waiting to be adopted? We currently have some $25/month sponsors, but any amount win help purchase food, cat litter, and help pay for vaccinations, spaying and neutering. We are trying to hold our adoption fees to $250.00 for dogs and $125.00 for cats. We also accept donations of dry dog and wet or dry cat food, cat litter, blankets and towels (no sheets or pillowcases please).

If you would like more information about any of our events or are interested in adopting a cat or dog please call us at 508-886-6191 or check our website http://www.sweetpeafora.org. If leaving a voicemail, please speak slowly and clearly. We regret that we cannot return ca1ls when we cannot identify the correct name and telephone number.

In closing, please consider celebrating spring with us at the dogwalk and remember, if you are considering adding a dog to your family, spring is a great time to train a puppy or retrain an new dog. Both of you will enjoy being out together.
