About Sweetpea

We are a non-profit, no-kill animal welfare organization, dedicated to the rescue, care and placement of stray, abandoned and surrendered animals.

Here are just some of the great dogs that we have placed:

Rocko Age: 7 years old
Gender: Male
Breed: Beagle
Size: Medium

House Trained: Probably
Up-to-date with routine shots: Yes
Neutered: Will be neutered before adoption
M/N Rocko and Chip came together from an owner who could no longer care for them. Rocko is 7 years old. As you can see from the photo, Rocko, the lighter of the two, on the left, is so sweet and very playful. Unfortunately, Chip turned out to have a malgnant tumor, so we fostered him and pampered him for his remaining time with us. But Rocko still haa a lot of years left - it is not unusual for beagles to have a life span of 12 to 15 years. He is just entering his prime!
Mocha Age: 2½ years old
Gender: Male
Breed: Basset Hound Mix
Size: Medium

House Trained: Unknown
Up-to-date with routine shots: Yes
Neutered: Yes
M Mocha is a bassett hound mix (we think). He is playful and lovable. Will be neutered and up to date with immunizations shortly and ready to go.. He is a real sweetie -- a very good family pet!
Mr Shag Age: 18 months - 2 years
Gender: Male
Breed: Lhasa Apso mix
Size: Small- Medium

House Trained: Yes
Up-to-date with routine shots: Yes
Neutered: Yes
M/N

Mr. Shag is an adorable young Lhasa Apso mix. He is very calm and comes with a bonus: he is crate trained. So you can leave him in his own little den when you go out.We think he is about 18 months to 2 years old. He really likes cats and other dogs - a wonderful little man!

A home with adults or older children would probably be better suited to his temperment. Mr. Shag has returned from his first adoptive home after nipping a visiting child. He is really not at all aggressive -- he as probably just frightened. He had not had any time to get adjusted to his new surroundings as he was only there three days. He is neutered and ready for a second chance.

Kayli Labrador retriever F/N Kayli is a young black lab female. She is quite lovely and like most young labs am excitable. She loves to play and she usually does what you want. Of course sometimes she can be a bit pigheaded -- well she is only just out of puppyhood! She is very friendly and loves to give kisses to everyone she meets!
Bear Labrador retriever M/N Bear is a Labrador mix and is about two we guess. He has had a tough start: he has some separation anxiety from being left alone in the house for long periods of time. . He is very strong and sometimes quite pigheaded. Bear is a neutered male. He is choosy about his playmates, he really enjoys playing and chasing a frisbee. Bear is an escape artist, having escaped from a few pens. So he will need a secure yard and someone who will reassure him that he is loved and wanted -- at last.
Thor German Shepherd Mix M/N As you can see from the photo, Thor is really scared just now. He was found wandering the streets alone, which is unbelievable considering how gentle and sweet he is. How could anyone dump a beautiful dog like this? Thor is a male German Shepherd mix about 2 years old - a real "gentle giant". He gets along well with other dogs and is very good and well-behaved with people. Please come and take him home -- he is longing to be somewhere safe.

Sherry & Taffy Beagle F Sherry and her sister Taffy came from another town's Animal Rescue service. They are about two years old, so they have a lot of life left in them! Both dogs were a little shy at first, but they warmed up to people fast, once they discovered the good life with us! They were adopted out together but returned when their new owner lost his job. They are sweetie-pies and so loving. It seems a shame for them to languish in our shelter again. It would be wonderful if they could be adopted together, but we will consider separate adoptions.
Valerie Beagle F Valerie is an 11 month old female beagle who was surrendered because she was too active for her family. She is very sweet -- and energetic. She loves to go for walks and track scents in true beagle style. Perfect for an active person or a family that wants a companion in their walks and play!
Beauty German Shepherd F/N Poor Beauty - how on earth can you resist that lovely little face? Who would dump a beautiful girl like this? Beauty is a young (11 months old) black Shepherd. She is housebroken (and good about it). Inquisitive about cats but unsure of them. She is very well-behaved with other dogs and good with children. She follows her foster mom all over the house -- wouldn't you like a little canine shadow to call your own? She'll love you wholeheartedly for the rest of her life.
Lucy Lab Mix F/N Lucy is a spayed yellow female lab mix about two and a half years old. Full of energy, she loves to run and play with other dogs. We are working on her tendency to bark, which is probably due to anxiety. She just needs a family who will spend time with her, to make her feel safe.
Benny Jack Russell M/N Benny is a neutered male Jack Russell mix under a year old. He is a sweet young boy who likes to frolic in the snow. Likes to run, needs to be on a leash. Good with cats. Inquisitive but somewhat timid with other dogs. Loves to be held and cuddled!
Scruggles Terrier M/N Scruggles is very friendly and loves a lot of attention. He chases Bradley and Chief all over the place and has great fun playing. A perfect dog for a fun family!
Chief Lab/Husky Mix M Chief is a neutered Lab-Husky mix, about 2-3 years old, so he is past the terrible teens for dogs! He is very good with other dogs. He is a very loving and friendly dog and is so sweet and good with the kids and the other dogs at Devereux. But he would be better in a home without small children as he is too enthusiastic for the little ones. Chief was found wandering around town in Rutland. He must have had a hard time in his life before he came to us, as he is scared of some men. He is getting depressed in the shelter and he really needs a forever home now.
Princess Shih Tzu F Princess was surrendered when her owner found out he could only have two dogs and was ordered to remove one. She needs a good grooming and will be spayed soon. She is a sweetie and is a little sad and confused about why she is suddenly on her own. She loves people and would love to come home with you.
Tillie Beagle F Tillie just presented us with seven pups. She was found in the State Park running loose. Four of her pups have been adopted; we are still looking for homes for the other three. She absolutely is a gem and is a great Mother. She is sweet and affectionate. Now it is her turn to find a home where her people will value her for what she is -- a great dog. She deserves a lot better than her previous family, who did not bother to have her spayed then dumped her to fend for herself or die in the wild when she the inevitable happened.
Bradley Labrador/Rhodesian Ridgeback Mix M/N Bradley is a great dog. He loves to play with all the other dogs here, so he is obviously very good with other dogs. He loves the kids and is a reallly big sweetie with people - he just wants to play, all the time!

Tllie's Pups Beagle Mix M & F Tillie's pups are half beagle and half what? - possibly Labrador retriever from the look of them. The top 2 photos are the same pup, the other two are two different doggies. They're cute and friendly - they just wants to play all the time!
Missy English Setter / Hound Mix F Missy was feeling shy on the day we took these photos. She is an awesome dog - full of life and very playful - she is only just out of puppyhood (the very best age). But she is obviously also a little lost at our rescue. She just wants a home, with a family to call her own. How can you resist those sad, big brown eyes?
Raisin Beagle F Raisin was abandoned with her sister Cinnamon, but we don't understand why. Her sister has been adopted, but we still have Raisin -- she is the sweetest dog you could imagine. She is about 18 months old -- just out of puppyhood, with all the bounce and play of a puppy, but old enough to listen and learn. She is so much fun to sit with , in the outdoor kennel! She has very good manners and get salong famously, with all the other dogs. Raisin was interested in exploring on the day when we took the photos! She would make a great pet and a wonderful companion -- especially for someone who likes to explore!
Dolly Great White Pyrenees F Dolly is the most georgeous dog you have ever seen -- and so, so sweet with it! A real beauty queen. She is playful and at just the right age to train -- at eighteen months, she is just out of puppyhood, and just old enough to listen and learn. If you want a constant companion who thinks life is a real buzz, Dolly is the girl for you!
Cody Corgi Mix M Cody is a really interactive dog -- he's really curious about everything and everyone he meets. He's irrepressible and full of fun. He's at the very best age to adopt -- just old enough to be responsible without having lost all the bounce of a puppy.
Nino Pit Bull Terrier M Nino is just 10 months old and as good as gold. Nino is a little shy with people at the moment because the family who owned him as a young puppy did not understand how to train or socialize him. Nino is very well-behaved with us, calm and biddable, he just seems to want to please (see the photos -- he's just a playful puppy). But he will grow to be a powerful dog and so will need to be trained.
Cinnamon Beagle F Cinnamon was abandoned with her sister Raisin, but we don't understand why. They are the sweetest dogs you could imagine! They are about 1 1/2 yrs old and are very cute, loving sisters. They were so much fun to sit with in the outdoor kennel! They have very good manners. They get along famously, eating, sleeping and playing together. Cinnamon is the one with the darker eyes and is a bit more cuddly than Raisin, who was interested in exploring! They would both make great pets and could be adopted together or separately..
Sugar English Springer Spaniel F Sugar is absolutely awesome! She is about 8 yrs old and she is a special needs dog as she has lost a leg. She loves to play in the fenced area. She gets along well with Nino the pitbull. You can see her dashing around in the pictures, having fun in the open! She gets around as well as any 4-legged dog and doesn't seem to know that she should be slower than the others. She has a sweet face, and is very well mannered and loving.
Rufus Chocolate Labrador M/N Rufus is a 2 yr. 6 month old neutered male chocolate lab, who is really playful and affectionate. He thinks he is still a puppy and is full of energy. He is very strong (93 pounds of brute force), but he is learning to walk much better now with a harness. An adopter will have to be firm and continue with his training. But he is very lovable, georgeous, and a real lovebug so he's worth it. As you can see from the photos, Rufus loves going for a walk! He still has a lot of puppy in him and he'll take you walking for miles!
Shiloh Beagle Mix F/N Shiloh is a two year old spayed female. She is very playful and absolutely loves people. A sweet-tempered, gentle dog, who likes walking with you or just hanging out -- the perfect household companion!
Dreyfus Chow-Golden RetrieverMix M/N Dreyfus is a Chow/Golden mix. He is a more sedate dog (starting on his senior years), about 8 years old. Dreyfus loves everyone - he is such a snuggler and still has a lot of play in him! A wonderful, loving companion and a huge fussball! Everyone loves him like crazy, so we should not have him very long.
Bella Staffordshire Bull Terrier F/N Bella is a one year old female Staffordshire Terrier. She is very friendly and great fun! Bella is young and has a lot of potential as a pet. She is highly trainable: very willing to learn, loving, and ready to bond to "her" humans.
Remington Brittany Spaniel/Border Collie Mix M/N Remington (aka Lil Abner) was a surrender because he was too active and bouncy for his previous owners. He is about 18 months old. He is extremely active and needs to be kept in a covered pen when outdoors, as he climbs over an open one. He's very funny and very smart -- he will climb up one side and down the other side! Remington is a small - medium (30 to 35 lbs.) neutered male Brittany Spaniel/Border Collie mix. He is a love: very sweet, but so active. He will need lots of love and training in his new home. If you keep him in a pen, it will have to be covered. He is up to date on shots.
Daisy Mae Border Collie F/N Daisy Mae is a Border Collie and is an absolute love. She was surrendered because she needs daily exercise. Border Collies are very active: they want to be running and herding all the time. Because of this, they will often nip at your heels -- and the kids' heels -- until they are trained not to. She knows some commands and will respond to them. When she first meets people, she gets very excited, but that disappears pretty fast and she loves attention. Daisy Mae is spayed and is up to date on all her shots.

Candy Australian Shepherd F/N Candy is absolutely a love. She enjoys playing with other dogs. She loves kids, but should not go to a home with small children as she tried to herd her previous owner's father by nipping at his heels (which is why she is with us). This is what Australian Shepherds were bred for, so you should expect this breed of dog to nip a little at first. Their instinctive goal in life is to herd you towards the family eating area!
She is so willing to please. She just loves everyone and is a wonderful dog!

Tazz Golden Australian Shepherd M/N Tazz is a two and a half year old neutered Golden Australian Shepherd. He is good with other dogs and older children. Tazz would be great for a farm, as he has lots and lots of energy!
Scruffy Terrier M Scruffy was surrendered when his owner entered a nursing home. He is about 5 years old and in need of a trim! He is a lovely dog and will be really handsome when he has been groomed.

Major German Shepherd M Major was found playing with two other dogs during a snowstorm in Rutland. He is very friendly and a nice dog!

Rusty Red Setter M Rusty is coming along nicely. He can be a bit excited at times but also loves to walk and play with Candy.

Tornado Chocolate Lab M Tornado is a Chocolate lab that is slowly learning to not jump all over you.

Bubba Yellow Labrador Retriever, Anatolian Shepherd Mix M What a sweetheart this guy is. He was found wandering the streets of Rutland and now is looking for a forever home. He is a gentle giant who does well with other dogs, cats, and children.

Sunshine Labrador Retriever F Sunshine is about 1½ - 2 years old, a soft, lovely, golden Lab!

Eadon Akita/Husky Mix M Eadon is about 1½ years old. This guy's a real sweetie. Has quickly learned his basic commands and loves all other animals and people. He would be a great addition to any household ...
... Eadon loves walking -- it's his favorite thing. He pulls a little, as he still needs to be taught leash manners. But he is a young dog and will learn very quickly.

Patriot German Shepherd Dog, Labrador Retriever Mix M A nice dog, very friendly!

Mika Labrador Retriever Mix M Great dog!

Bandit Border Collie Mix M Bandit was one of my very favorite dogs. He was friendly, loved exploring, car-rides, home visits, and walking. He was adopted to a wonderful couple, who loved him and he became very attached to their dog. Unfortunately, he passed away only seven months after adoption. But he was loved, happy, and had a wonderful home in which to end his days.
